Reformed Episcopal Church
Mission Statement

Sweet, Pleasant, and Unspeakable Comfort

by Mark Woolsey

There is a promise given in the Thirty-nine Articles that is of great moment, and yet it is routinely ignored, eviscerated, or denied.  It may be surprising to refer to any section of the articles as a promise since they are normally used (when used at all) to define the theological boundaries of the Anglican Church.  They contain declarations, anathemas, definitions, fine distinctions, and warnings, but scattered throughout are also promises.  This promise is stated as an assertion – it is simply presumed to be true – and when it is understood, it sheds new light on a controversial article.  This promise is

… the godly consideration of Predestination, and our Election in Christ, is full of sweet, pleasant, and unspeakable comfort to godly persons, … as well because it doth greatly establish and confirm their faith of eternal Salvation to be enjoyed through Christ, as because it doth fervently kindle their love towards God

Predestination as presented in article 17 is calculated, not capricious; soteriological, not philosophical; essential, not peripheral; sweet, not sour; pleasant, not repulsive; and comforting, not disturbing.  The first question that must be asked, then, if predestination is all of these things, and is so desirable, then what exactly is it?

rovidence Church is  a parish of the Reformed Episcopal Church (REC), a body of Anglican Christians founded in 1873 under the leadership of the Rt. Rev. George David Cummins.  We confess the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds and hold to The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion  as a summary statement of Christian doctrine. We have a high view of Holy Scripture, and of the traditional, liturgical worship found in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
